Island of God (Ilha de Deus)

An integrated urbanization program, initiated in 2006, in the Ilha de Deus community, which had one of the lowest HDIs in Recife. The community lived precariously in stilt houses, without infrastructure, and with a high rate of violence. Completely marginalized from society, the island had minimal access to the mainland and thus grew with precarious housing and without basic infrastructure and services.
